#L2G with Ada Africa: Before Applying for that Global Opportunity

Most fail or not selected for opportunities applied for not because of lack of ability but could be because of lack of proper direction and discipline. I see people with talents and abilities yet unsuccessful when they apply for certain opportunities.

I run both a social enterprise and a nonprofit. I once applied for an opportunity using the nonprofit, I wasn’t successful. The next round of the same application came, I took time to re-read the requirement and discovered the social enterprise fits in better, hence I used it and I got the opportunity.

Do not rush to apply for any opportunity you feel you are eligible for. Before you begin, research about the organization; Review thoroughly – read through the opportunity (grant, scholarship) criteria/ requirements and follow directions, instructions or guidelines. Determine if your idea or course is what the funder actually funds.

Funders are very specific in what they are looking for and will rarely deviate from their category. You may have the very best PURPLE tie & dye in the world, but if the grant is only for the producers of GREEN tie & dye, you won't get the grant. Don’t bother to convince them that the PURPLE tie & dye is better than the GREEN one.

Before you begin answering the questions even while you have started, review the application and the requirements carefully. Most calls for proposals or application has rules, guidelines or procedures that must be followed. Make sure your application responses have followed all the rules.

Read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and if your worry, confusion or concern is not addressed, please kindly email and get information from the agency or organization rather than asking me or whoever that sent you the opportunity link.

Check if you are within the age range, the region/country, experience etc required to apply. Some would even complain that the particular link I shared didn’t have the details. If you are so much interested in the opportunity, it is your duty to ransack and raid the website to get all the info needed to enable you proceed well with the application. Go through the check list of the eligibility and purpose idea to make sure you fit in to apply.
